Unconscious Mutterings FAQ

More than you probably wanted to know
  1. What is free association?
Free association is described as a "psychonanalytic procedure in which a person is encouraged to give free rein to his or her thoughts and feelings, verbalizing whatever comes into the mind without monitoring its content." Over time, this technique is supposed to help bring forth repressed thoughts and feelings that the person can then work through to gain a better sense of self.
  2. How do I play?
Each week I'll post ten words to which you can respond to with the first thing that comes to mind. Some words will call forth 'normal' reponses as in shoe may lead to tennis, but who knows, maybe it will call forth something a little out of the ordinary.
  3. Why should I register for an account?
Registering for an account simply enables you to comment on the site without having to type in your contact information. If you have cookies set, of course, this isn't usually a problem. But if you have an account and you're logged in then you don't even see the contact info fields. Having an account also does away with having to fill out the CAPTCHA field. I had to enable this as an extra security measure against evil spammers. Registration is of course free. You can deactivate your account at any time. Inactive accounts, that is, accounts where the user hasn't logged in for more than six months, will be deleted by the site administrator. This is done simply to ensure that the member list doesn't become cluttered with old, unused accounts.
  4. What are the rules?
My favorite line from Grease has to be "Rules are, there are no rules." That's the way it is with this game. There are no right or wrong answers. Don't limit yourself to one word responses, just say everything that pops into your head. AND you don't have to have your words up on Sunday. Take all week if you want!
  5. When are the words posted?
The words are posted every Sunday at 12 am. Need a weekly reminder? Sign up for the notification list. Signup form is on the left. You should expect to only get one email a week, emails are protected and I do not share the list with anyone.
  6. How do you come up with the words?
I try to make the word selection as random as possible. Sometimes I'll just open up the dictionary, close my eyes and point. Clearly it's not a very scientific process. You're welcome to send along some words if you like. Just email me.
  7. Who gets to play?
Anyone! If you have a weblog, copy and paste the code that I supply into your publisher, but if you don't have a weblog you're welcome to leave your words in the comments.
  8. How do I let people know I'm playing?
Stop by and leave a comment letting people know you've posted your words or send a trackback ping. Make sure you grab a logo! Send me an email to let me know you're playing and I'll add your site to the list of players. Remember to include the URL you'd like me to list in your email.
  9. What do I link to?
Please make sure you link to http://subliminal.lunanina.com. Thanks!
  10. I really like the game and would like to show my appreciation!
If you'd like to make a small donation to defray hosting costs, please use the link on the right. The donations go straight to my hosting company so you can be sure I won't be running away to Vegas or some other hot, sunny location!
  11. How did you come up with this game?
Majoring in psychology probably had a lot to do with it. This is a little game I like to play with myself. At some point I decided to put a couple of words up on the blog to see what people would come up with. After a couple of games someone suggested that I turn it into a meme and so here we are.
  12. Who runs this thing?
    Just me.

Have a question that hasn't been answered? Please feel free to send me an email. Just click on any of the email links on the left (under the "Who's Playing?" section).
